That took a while... [Closed] Empty That took a while... [Closed]

Post by Genpaku Thu May 05, 2016 4:03 am

Night had sunk its teeth deep into the small suburban city in Japan, the barest piece of a moon hanging low in the sky at the late hour.  A chill wind blew through the sleeping town, but not all things drifted in blessed sleep this night.

Tonight, like most nights, was a night the spirits moved.

A young shinigami sat quietly on a rooftop, watching out over the city that was his patrol for this deployment.  He was not at his ease.  Over the last several months things had been unkind to the shinigami on patrol.  Not specifically in this city, or even in this area, but in general.  There were always a few shinigami that didn't make it back from patrols.  Some bit off more than they could chew, some just got unlucky.  However, the number of missing shinigami had experienced a sudden spike recently with no explanation.  Of course his captain, and most of the higher ups, had simply called for more caution.  They said they were working on it.

Whether anything had been done yet though, who knew?

He looked up, his senses catching on something.  It was faint, but he sensed a pulse of power.  A moment later his denreishinki began to buzz; he pulled it out and flipped it open.  The hollow had emerged close by.  He pocketed the phone-like device and jumped from the roof, making his way at speed towards where the hollow had appeared.  What he didn't know was that he was quite the center of attention this evening.  He arrived in the area, landing on a lit side street.  He stood there, reaching out with his senses; now where had the hollow gone after it had come though?

The answer; right above him.  The shinigami lunged to the left, his instincts screaming at him as a large fist slammed into the concrete right where he'd been standing a moment before.  His Zanpakutō was free from his sheath in a moment, pity that wasn't quick enough.  In the moment before impact the shinigami saw multiple limbs all about him, closing in; the initial attack had been a feint.  The limbs slammed into him, all dull force at least.  The shinigami coughed blood as his legs buckled, looking to the sky.  A grotesque mask flew towards him, jaws wide with hunger and glee.

There was a light foot fall, the rush of wind and cloth, then the sounds of impact.  The shinigami opened his eyes to an odd sight.  Above him stood another shinigami, shorter than him.  The shinigami's fist was extended, a closed fist having impacted the lunging mask at its edge in mid flight.  As he watched, the mask shattered and the Hollow began to dissolve.  It was only after a moment that the spiritual pressure of the second Shinigami appeared; it was only after a moment that the shinigami noticed the white haori on the younger shinigami's shoulders.

"Captain Arishima?" he finally sputtered out.
"You should probably hold off on talking too much," Genpaku said as he knelt down.  His hands began to glow softly as Genpaku tended to some of the wounds.  "I can clean you up enough to get you back to the Gotei.  Consider it my way of apologizing."
    "Apologizing?  For what?
"Using you as bait."  Genpaku held the healing Kidō a few more moments before letting it fade.  "You just helped me take out the Hollow that's been hunting down Shinigami for the last several months.  Turns out, somehow, the Hollow was centering in on Shinigami's Zanpaku-tous."

It had taken Genpaku a while to figure that bit out.  He'd noticed the rise in missing Shinigami, and it was only after looking deeper into the disappearances that he noticed the commonality; water-type Zanpaku-tous.  On top of that, the Hollow had been smart.  It had never stayed if multiple shinigami's presences could be felt.  And it fled at the first sign of a stronger opponent.  More terrifying though, the Hollow had some method of faking an entrance, tricking the denreishinki and luring his prey into the trap.
"I had to actually hide and wait for it to commit to attacking you before I could step in, or else it would have fled again.  It's been doing that for months.  Well, had been," Genpaku said, a hint of satisfaction in his voice.
"Now come on; let's get you back."

He drew one of his own Zanpaku-tous, holding it out and summoning up the gate back to the Soul Society as he helped the other Shinigami back through and home.  He escorted him to the 4th Division for a check-up, though Genpaku was decently certain he'd be back out in the field inside of a few hours.  He left the 4th Division, happy in a sense to be back in the Seireitei.  He'd been out for months, having decided to personally take care of that particular Hollow after it had nabbed several of his Division members.  It was their dissappearance that had drawn his attention, after all.

The guard at the senkaimon was heavier than normal. After a certain incident regarding an Arrancar using it, Kaminari made sure to increase it's monitoring. When it opened and Captain Arishima came through with an injured member of the Gotei 13, he was immediately aided and reported. He wasn't in trouble, yet, but they were ordered to inform Captain Yamanaka of the missing members of the Gotei returning. Once Yamanaka was informed, she made her required call as well.

Kaminari received the call right as she was about to sit down to dinner. He was back. Kaminari sighed in relief. Finally, some good news. "If he headed to the Fourth, have Midori hold him there until I arrive." she said and hung up the phone, only to pick up and make another call.

Back at the fourth, Midori was already waiting for a certain silver haired Shinigami and the one he was bringing in. She let her subordinates take care of the injured man and stepped in front of Captain Arishima as he tried to leave. "Where are you going?" Midori asked him in annoyance, "You can't just disappear for months, return, and then not explain where you've been. Kaminari is already on her way. She's been worried sick about all of you and you are not going to leave just to stress her out more than she already is. She doesn't need anymore of this shit now, not in her condition, so you're staying."

Genpaku had noticed the heavier guard at the Senkaimon, but had not thought to comment on it at the time. However, being met at the Fourth Division by Midori did throw up some alarm bells, and her general attitude only reinforced this. He raised an eyebrow at her mini-tyraid, waiting until she'd finished and letting it hang in the air for a few moments.
"So I take it I missed something," he said, making it more a statment than a question.
"I'd left notice back with operator at the Twelth Division back a few months ago that I was dropping communications on a hunch about a target I was hunting. If something came up they were supposed to force the denreishinki back on and get in touch." he commented, crossing his arms.

Midori was certainly annoyed, and it was obvious Genpaku was a little as well. It was also obvious his mind was partially somewhere else. What he'd pieced together about this hollow had been disturbing.

"Its not like I have anywhere I'm headed at the moment. I was going to grab something to eat then check in one what I'd missed while I was taking care of things in the real world. Was hoping the Noble Houses had sorted out their differences without destroying all order in the Soul Society while I was gone. Then again, I thought I'd get a call if that was what was happening."

Midori did not mean to sound so annoyed at him, but she was. "Yeah, actually..." she nodded as if it were obvious, "You missed a lot. You had a lot of people worried about you." His explanation only sent up a few alarms for Midori. She looked off and sighed, shaking her head in more annoyance. "They've been acting strange lately. I don't know why, but there's been more secrecy than normal. Some are wondering whether Captain Yamanaka's menstrual cycle has fallen out of whack again." Midori quickly realized what she said and closed her eyes. She smiled and laughed at it, but looked back to Gen with a playful warning, "Don't you dare tell anyone I said that. God, how embarrassing."

"The Saionji and Ishino went at it. The Ishino lost, of course. Why they thought they could go up against the Captain Saionji Brother's, I don't know... Things seem to have settled on that end." Midori crossed her own arms and glanced over to the right. Kaminari was about to round the corner. "Kaminari's gotten fat as all hell in  your absence, so that'll be a fun sight for you." Midori held back a laugh as a highly annoyed, short, pregnant woman stepped around the corner with puffed up cheeks. She tried to look angry, but with that giant bulge coming from her mid-section, it was hard. "I heard that, damn it." Kaminari pretty much waddled over to Genpaku and stared at him, "You're late."

Genpaku had to wonder when the Twelth Division wasn't acting strange, but for it to be called out it was probably worse than usual. Given time, he was sure he'd hear the whole lot of it. At Midori's slip/joke, Genpaku let out a small laugh but gave a silent nod to Midori as a confirmation that he'd not spread it any further. The news that the Ishino had escalated things to full blown war and that it had been 'settled' however was more worrisome in some respects. With a sudden opening at the top of the noble families it would only be a matter of time till the lesser houses began to scramble for the position. Best keep his head clear of that entire mess.

The final comment was met with a curious look from Genpaku, followed by Kaminari's entrance. Genpaku watcehd her waddle over to her, and give her playful but petulant greeting. He smiled at her as he processed everything.

"Well, someone's been busy since I left. And since before then unless I miss my guess," he said, giving her an all too innocent smile to underpin the joke. Then his smile abruptly faded.
"And sorry. I was rather busy."

"Of course I've been busy... I'm the Captain Commander! I'm gonna be a mother and wife... There's a lot changing and I would hope that one of the most important people in my life wouldn't just vanish on me like that again!" Kaminari smacked his upper arm in frustration. He apologized and she sighed. "It's fine. I would have been here to meet you, but the extra weight is seriously slowing me down... Speaking of, I need to sit, my back is killing me. Come, come." Kaminari motioned for Genpaku and Midori to follow. Midori pointed at Kaminari and mouthed silently "She's so fat" to Genpaku and then followed. Kaminari walked around the side of one of the Division buildings and into a courtyard where a few tables were set up. She sat down and sighed of relief as the pain in her back faded.

"So since you've been gone, we've had multiple disappearances... Two of them have been Captains, you were previously thought as a third... I'm so glad you're baaaack..." she whined and then Kaminari's expression became angry for a moment, so she smacked at his arm again, "Don't scare me like that again, damn it." She relaxed and looked to Midori, who started laughing. "What are you laughing at?" she asked and Midori replied with a shake of her head, "I'm hungry... I was about to eat dinner when you called." "Captain Arishima mentioned being hungry too, so I'll get us something while you explain." "Whatever it is, put pickles on it." Midori smiled and held back a laugh before nodding and walking off.

"So the main events that occurred while you were away..." Kaminari crossed her arms and thought for a moment, kicking her feet because they didn't reach the ground, "Well, Captain Araragi and Koenig vanished without a trace. The Ishino and the Saionji went from a four month long cold war to battling it out on Saionji grounds. That situation is mostly settled. I'm pregnant and engaged to Tsubine... Yes, that's important enough to report! And... Oh, we had an Arrancar breach and she's probably one of the kindest little girls you'd ever meet." Kaminari smiled for a moment and then it faded, "Obviously there is something wrong with her, but she was some how able to use our senkaimon to get here..."

He followed the two women out to the garden, sharing a silent chuckle with Midori as they walked. Kaminari selected a table, and the lot of them took a seat. The disappearances of the other captain's caught his interest, and his eyes narrowed slightly as she spoke on it; he didn't get to dwell on it long for he was once more smacked, and he took the abuse good naturedly. Midori excused herself to get food for the lot of them as Kaminari launched into catching him up on some of what he'd missed.

The rest of the news was more or less what he'd be coming to expect from his short time back in Soul Society. There was trouble brewing on the horizon, and that wasn't good considering the Captain Commander may well be incapable of enforcing her position in the near future. Genpaku gave little outward reaction to the explanation of the strange Arrancar that was now, apparently, residing here in Soul Society. He could only assume the Arrancar was child-like in appearance for Kaminari to have the reaction she did, and for her not to have been destroyed already.

"The disappearances are worrying. That was the majority of the reason I was gone so long. I was tracking down a Hollow that had developed some...strange habits. And abilities. It wasn't right; I feel like its more important than it seemed. Either way, it won't be hunting down anyone anymore." he said, his face serious as he thought about the situation.
"Has anyone gone out to check the last known locations of those Captains? Is the Twelfth even being co-operative in trying to find them?"

The explanation Genpaku gave for his absence was understandable. Kaminari nodded in approval. "So you took care of it? Good." She was curious about the abilities this hollow possessed to be able to ensnare so many of their own in it's little trap, but that would be a subject for later. "Their homes? Training grounds? Offices? That's really all we've got right now. Their belongings have been searched and we've sent out rescue teams, but have gotten nothing." Kaminari explained placed her hands on her belly as she thought, "The Twelfth is being odd right now, even more so than usual, but Captain Yamanaka has been giving me the information she's found. Apparently there is someone else in the system right now. The person is good at covering their tracks and never seem to get into the system from the same place, so it's difficult to figure out who it is. Captain Yamanaka also has to wait for them to access the information to even trace them, so waiting around for that to happen is a pain in the ass. Captain Yamanaka is strange, like most scientists I meet, but she's loyal, so I don't think she's lying or hiding anything. I trust her to bring me the information when she finds something."

There was a moment of silence as Kaminari fell into deep thought. She turned to him and sighed. "I'm not giving up on being Captain Commander." she stated, "Midori thinks I should hand the spot back to Tsubine or pick a successor. I won't do it... I worked way too hard to get here and I'm no-..." Kaminari froze when she a familiar reiatsu entered the area. She just smiled and looked apologetically at Genpaku. Within a moment from that change of expression, a white haired woman appeared behind Genpaku and wrapped her arms around him from behind. She lifted him up from his chair, swung him around a bit, and then sat him back down. "That's out of my system!" Lilith said with a smile as she sat down next to Genpaku, "Where have you bee-.. Scratch that. I'm glad you're back. I'm sure you've already had to explain to the worry wart and you don't need to again. Have you caught him up on everything that's gone on?" Kaminari nodded. "Good. So I-..." "God, Kaminari, you're so predictable!" Midori returned with a plate of food, including some for Lilith, "I had a feeling you'd be showing up."

"Oh... I've got perfect timing. Looks good. Thanks." Lilith rubbed her hands together, "Yum." "What?!" Kaminari yelled as she sat up in her chair, "I promised I'd call her the moment we got word on him. It's not my fault. She just wuvs her wittle boy." Kaminari giggled and looked at the plate as Midori set it in front of her. "Oh don't worry, Kaminari, I wuv you and all of my little girls and boys equally." "So you've finally embraced the title, hm?" Lilith shrugged and nodded, "Might as well. I end up in the same sort of relationship with everyone and end up feeling the same way about it, so what's the point of fighting it?" "Do not ever call me your little girl." "No. You're like the eldest child that I trust not to fuck up and to watch over the rest of your siblings." Midori and Kaminari looked to each other and then nodded in agreement. "This one on the other hand..." Lilith said, placing a hand on Genpaku's shoulder, "He's the one I have to worry about running off and getting kidnapped by Arran-... No, that's you." Lilith looked to Kaminari, who's playful smile immediately dropped, "Fuuck yooouu." Lilith laughed and leaned closer to Genpaku and smiled stupidly wide, "You don't mind being my little boy, right?"

There was an almost ritualistic feel to this gathering; a routine of sorts that had very little to do with the specifics of individual's actions or words. It was the general sentiments that underpinned the entire gathering.

    It felt like family.

Genpaku wasn't sure how smart Kaminari's trust in the Twelfth was, but that wasn't really his place to say. It wasn't that he held any particular grudges or suspicions of the Twelfth, but when a group started acting weird he preferred to confront it and sort it out rather than let it fester quietly in the dark on its own. Everyone had their own way of taking care of things. Likewise, he wasn't sure how great an idea it was to hold onto the Captain Commander's position given how much Kaminari had been through in the last year. Then again, he could also understand Kaminari's disinterest in giving away the position she had sought so vehemently.

It should be said that Genpaku was neither surprised at Lilith's appearance, nor did he react much to her particular form of greeting other than to give a small glare to Kaminari as he was swung about. He was plopped back into his seat, and gave Lilith a small smile in greeting as she began to talk with little room for response. Midori returned, placing down plates of food for everyone. Safe to say he wasn't getting out of here anytime soon then; might as well make the best of it, no?

For the most part Genpaku kept out of the conversation as the women chattered back and forth amongst themselves. He took a few bites of food, and took a moment to roll around the things he had learned thus far. That was, until Lilith turned the conversation back on him. As she started he raised an eyebrow before she turned back on Kaminari. Then Lilith turned back on him with a question.

"Would it stop you from calling me it anyway?" he asked, but there were no teeth in his comment; he gave her a familiar smile and left his own complaints about all of that out of it for now. He took a bite of food to save from having to talk for a few moments.

"So besides the Soul Society falling apart at the seams, what else have I missed?"

"No, no I wouldn't." Lilith shook her head. Genpaku was among her favorite people. Sure, parents didn't usually pick favorites, but that really was just a title. Genpaku held a special place in her heart, similar to Kaminari's. "We wouldn't let her if she tried, so that's where that is coming from." "Soon you're gonna have one of your own. Do you know what it is yet?" "I do." "Yeah, and I don't want to know. I'm waiting for him or her to be born. Just keep that information to yourself." "Why wouldn't you want to know? Aren't you getting a nursery prepared?" Kaminari just shook her head. She was still in partial denial about all of this and the two women could tell. She looked away from everyone as the group fell silent. Lilith and Midori just looked to each other, obviously worried about Kaminari. Luckily, Genpaku changed the subject. Kaminari mouthed "Thank you" to him once she got the chance to.

"From what I heard, Kaminari caught you up on anything major, so unless you're wanting to know every little thing, there isn't much else to tell you." "Stop being so silent." "It'd help if we stopped talking about the baby." "So what about you, Gen?" "Yeah, what about you? Anything new or interesting while you were out there? And I don't mean about the hollow; anything else but that."

Genpaku looked between the three women as they chattered. For the most part he let the conversation just wash over him, taking it in but not really jumping in on it. Eventually the conversation turned back towards him though. He shot a look at Kaminari as she ruled out the Hollow; this was a bit annoying, because he had thoughts on said Hollow and the implications it had with its abilities. Instead, he'd keep those concerns to himself for now as he set his thoughts in a more cohesive order.

He leaned back, looking up at the sky and thinking quietly for a few moments.

"Not much really. Things were pretty quiet out in the human world as far as things go, the Hollow not withstanding. Since I've been gone I've mostly avoided most of the drama going on back here apparently, including the whole scuffle with the Noble Houses such as it was. I imagine though there's going to be a bit of dust up between the minor houses now that their is a spot open at the top of the heap though," he mused aloud. While he rarely brought it up these were things Genpaku had to pay attention to, what with being the only member of a Noble House and all that.

As far as he was concerned, this was more of a problem than he was making out to be or than anyone would make of it. Mostly because of the timing; there was something going on with the Hollows from what he had guessed, the Twelfth Division was acting strange, the whole attempt on Kaminari's life, and now her pregnancy. The coming several months were certainly going to end up being...eventful was a kind way to put it he supposed. In the back of his mind he began to wonder if spending a few more months in the human world might be a smart option.

Midori and Kaminari seemed to just accept Genpaku's answer, but Lilith wasn't in agreement with them. "You have to be the most boring conversationalist I've ever met. One of these days, I'm going to get you to open up that mind a bit more." Lilith crossed one leg over the other and leaned back in her chair, putting both of her hands behind her head. Midori just shook her head and Kaminari just smiled and smile he only knew. She knew why he wasn't the most talkative and though she'd like him to be, she accepted that he just wouldn't do it. "He does bring up a good point." Kaminari brought up, "Who is going to take the spot the Ishino have left behind?" "I don't know. I've already heard a few rumors that some of the lower noble houses are already preparing for it." "Whatever happens, it's none of my business. As long as it doesn't flood into the Seireitei, I don't care what they do." "I can agree, but-"

Kaminari jerked up in her chair and tensed. She held her breath for a moment and kept her eyes closed. "Is the baby kicking?" Midori asked with a smile. Kaminari nodded, "Little bastard's trying to tear me up from the inside out." "Just relax. Tensing only makes it worse." Kaminari did her best to sit back comfortably in the chair. She put both of her hands on her stomach and side. Midori and Lilith laughed at the sight and Kaminari raised an eyebrow at them. "What?" "You're so fat." Midori said, laughing again. "I can't wait till you have kids so I can make fun of you for it." "I will wear my belly bump proudly, thank you very much." "I am not ever having kids." "You've got too many as it is, so the Seireitei thanks you for that one." "Hater." The three shared a laugh and then Lilith turned to Genpaku. She pat him on the leg twice and smiled, "Oh, it's glad to have you home. Missed the talks."
