False dawn had settled over the Seireitei, the sky a dull grey-blue that would not brighten for some time yet.  There was a slight chill in the morning air, the first whispers of a changing season.  This was the time of day when Genpaku did most of his training; there had been a time when he'd done this to avoid other people.  Now it was simply a habit, and old habits die long deaths.  Today's training required a specific setting though; normally, Genpaku trained outdoors where he had freedom to move about.  Whenever he was training with his own Zanpaku-tous, he always left the Seireitei to find unpopulated places where his reiatsu would not negatively affect anyone accidentally.  Today however, Genpaku needed to be indoors.  Every Division had an indoor training area, one of those old-style dojos.  And at this hour, he had the room to himself.

The Captain of the Tenth Division stood at the center of the room.  After a moment, he took a step forward and flipped himself into a handstand.  However, his concentration and balance were interrupted by something obvious; his clothing sagged down, instantly becoming an irritation.  He sighed and shoved himself out of the handstand and back to standing.  He seemed to consider the time for a moment; it was unlikely anyone would be along any time soon.  So he walked to the edge of the room, removing his kosode and shitagi.  He folded them neatly and placed them down on top of his Haiori and zanpaku-tous.  Two things became readily apparent as Genpaku made his way back to the center of the room.

One, that the Captain of the Tenth Division was in much better shape than his slender frame would suggest.  His arms were corded muscle, not the bulging things a body builder would proudly display; they were more like swimmer's muscles, or a martial artist's.  They were muscles shaped to purpose.  The second, and more obvious, feature were the scars.  One expected someone who participated in melee combat against monsters to sport a few scars.  Some displayed them with pride, some made no ornamentation of them.  If you were observant and spent time around Genpaku Arishima, you would have spotted a few scars on his person.  A few that poked out along his arms near his wrists and hands.  A few that peered out at his collar bone.  Those, however, were the least of his scars.

Naked to the waist, Genpaku's chest and abdomen were a ruin of old scars.  Indeed there seemed to be more scar than skin; gashes and gouges, Genpaku had more scars than almost any other few Shinigami combined.  These scars crawled up to his shoulders and down his arms.  There were surprisingly few on his back, though those that were there looked more like they had been made from the front than from a blow originating behind him.  While Genpaku had made peace with the event that had spawned these scars, he always covered them in the presence of others; peace or not he was not a fan of retelling the story of their creation or of dealing with the stares that it generated.

As he reached the center of the room he flipped back into his handstand, gauging his balance.  His eyes became focused as he set about his training.  He bent his arm, doing a hand-stand push up; as he came back up he vanished.  He appeared again, in a different spot of the dojo still holding his hand-stand.  In the Gotei, Genpaku was considered by many to be one of the faster Shinigami.  There was a time when he'd even have gone along with someone saying he might have been one of the top three active Shinigami where speed was concerned.  It was a different time.  Along the same vein, there were few Shinigami who had delved into the Hohō techniques as far as Genpaku had and he was one of the few that was capable of performing a flash step using his hands and arms.  He didn't seem to find this particularly impressive anymore.

Thus, this exercise.  He repeated it again and again, keeping count in his head.

When the alarm went off this morning, Hanae was brought from a wonderful dream by the loud high pitched beep that all universes seemed to loath. Her hand slapped over the clock, knocking it to the floor with a thud and turning the alarm off at the same time. Worth, though she might need a new clock. Hanae was not meant to be up this early. She had never been a morning person, but Nina was and Nina wanted to train again today. Hanae had promised her an early morning training session and needed to be there within the next hour to keep that promise. And so Hanae forced herself from bed.

Hanae went through her repetitive morning routine. She ate, took a shower, brushed her teeth, got her hair half-way decent, and got dressed in the usual Shinigami garb. Ready and still droopy-eyed from the morning tiredness, Hanae stepped out of her little apartment and made her way to the Tenth Division indoor training grounds. Upon arrival, she quickly noticed someone else was already there. Her mind wasn't registering anything normally, so she stared for quite some time before realizing it was her fucking Captain! Hanae's attention was grabbed by this realization and her focus returned.

With a tired head tilted to the left, she watched his training exercise with a bit of intrigue. It took her a bit to realize that Nina wasn't here. She looked around the dojo to confirm and Nina really wasn't here. It wasn't like Nina to be late. "Odd." she thought and then turned her attention back to Captain Arishima. With her mind coming into focus, she noticed the many scars he had all over his body. She had never seen him with his shirt off before, even with all of the training sessions she had seen him in. Hanae finally stepped fully into the room and slid the wooden door shut, "Hey, Captain."

Hanae dropped a small pack filled with a few bottles of water, healthy snacks, and a clean uniform next to the door. She raised her arms and stretched, leaning to the left and the right. "Have you seen Nina? She isn't usually late... Unless you scared her away, of course." Hanae raised an eyebrow at her Captain and then giggled at the thought, "Also, you do know that Captain Hayashi can get rid of those..." Hanae points to his chest. "You never take your shirt of around people. Something tells me that is why. If you don't like them, ask her. However, some women do think they're hot. Hehe."

This wasn't really the exercise Genpaku had planned to run today for himself; truth be told, it was a warm-up to get him focused and the blood flowing.  That said Genpaku was always committed to his training, always focused, so perhaps it was no surprise that he didn't notice someone approaching.  He hit a count of fifty, letting out a breath.  He swayed in place a moment, readjusting his balance, and was about to start the next exercise when he heard a footstep, and a greeting.

The motion had already began though; Genpaku vanished from where he was, and the next moment his feet made contact with the ceiling.  He hung there a moment, crouched on the ceiling as his eyes sighted on Hanae.  Then he vanished again, appearing near where his clothes were laid neatly on the ground.

“I'm afraid I have not seen Fourth Seat Togami this morning,” Genpaku said as he straightened up, pulling his shitagi on.  He paused a moment when Hanae commented on the scars.  He looked back at her as she continued, his face strangely empty for the space of a breath.  He turned back at her last comment, and a small tension that had begun to grow in those few moments was broken by a small chuckle from Genpaku.

“Not all wounds heal so easily, Miss Jokodo,” he said.  He tied the shitagi back in place, but decided to forgo the kosode if he was going to continue his training.
“What brings you out so early this morning?”

Coming to train so early in the morning was not Hanae's preference. She prefered to start the day with a nice walk to get coffee at one of the shops. Getting hot and sweaty is something she often complained about. When Nina was late, Hanae had to worry. Nina was never late to a training session. Hanae had expected her to be training before the actual appointed time they wanted to meet actually. "So you did scare her away. Maybe she left me a note or something..." Hanae said playfully, but was actually looking around for some sort of note. Captain Arishima's words struck a bit of a chord with her. She looked back to him with curiosity in her eyes, but that faded. "I'm sorry, Captain. I didn't know it'd be a sore subject." She had an apologetic smile, "I hope it heals for you soon."

"Now where the hell is Nina?" She walked over to the door that lead into the locker rooms, but no one was there either. Hanae closed the door behind her and put her hands on her hips. "Nina, of course!" she pouted with annoyance, "I don't get up this early. She gets up this early! I prefer to sleep in, make a huge breakfast, get some work done, and then train. Nina wants to be here the moment the sun has shined on the Seireitei!" Hanae flailed her arms like an angry child and then slumped. "If I knew she was going to be late, I could have slept about thirty minutes more..." Hanae whined with a chuckle and then sighed, "In other words, I prefer afternoons for the hardcore stuff, not mornings. How about you? I don't usually see anyone awake during Nina's oppressive hours. *Gasp* Did she threaten you too?!"

Genpaku looked back at Hanae and gave her a small smile, letting the subject drop as Hanae move on to complaining about Nina being missing. Her antics were comical, and he suspected she was purposefully trying to lighten the mood some.
“So she's highly motivated; there are worst things to be,” he commented.

He gave a laugh when Hanae asked if Nina had threatened him into training. He shook his head.

“No no. I started training early in the mornings shortly after coming to the Seireitei. It became a habit, and you know what they say about old habits. As I moved up the ranks, I generally kept that schedule simply because then I had all the room I needed to practice movements and such,” he explained as he walked a little closer to where Hanae stood.
“Could she be just running late? Or do you think she is hanging around here somewhere waiting for the room to be cleared?”

"I don't mean it's a bad thing! I can be motivated sometimes too, but I prefer to do it after lunch." Hanae replied with a content shrug. Captain Arishima laughing at her question allowed her to shoot a playful puffy cheeked glare at him. "Hmph. Well, aren't you lucky. She threatens me all the time. Usually with stealing my lunch, volunteering me for extra work, or something along those lines." Hanae listened to his explanation of why he was here and raised an eyebrow. His next question made Hanae wonder and she looked around the dojo curiously. "I'm not so suuuure..." Hanae stepped closer to Captain Arishima and put her hands behind her back. The smile she held was full of mischief and to some, like Nina, would be a dangerous expression to see Hanae wear. A dangerous one indeed...

"You do realize that would mean that you did scare her away, riiight?" Hanae slipped passed him and over to another set of doors. Captain Arishima could probably sense two people approaching the building, but Hanae could not. "I mean, if she saw you coming here, she might have panicked and hid herself away... Now, I wonder why she'd do THAT!" Hanae quickly slid one of the storage doors open and looked inside. She examined the room and then sighed. "Damn, she's really not here..." Hanae said with concern, "That's really not like her." The playfulness Hanae had been having faded away. "I should go check on he-... Oh, hey Miko. Nina, you don't look so well. Are you okay?" Hanae rushed over to the two women who entered. Miko was helping Nina walk, who was obviously sick.

"I'll be fine. It's just a cold." Nina said with a confident smile and gave Hanae a thumbs up. "A cold, my ass. She was collapsed outside. She's got a fever and having a hard time breathing. I'm taking her to the infirmary." Miko glared at Nina as she explained, "You're working yourself to death and if you don't stop it, you're gonna do something worse than this." "I'll go with you." "No, you are going to complete your training, slacker." Nina demanded, flicking Hanae on the nose, "You aren't using me as an excuse to get out of it. You better be here at least an hour, or I'll triple our next training course." "Oh, come on!" Hanae pouted. "Captain Arishima... You mind kicking the slackers ass. She needs it more than you know. Our third seat has gotten soft." "Oh, that's cold." "Warmer than a coffin." "She's got a point."

Genpaku raised an eyebrow as Hanae's expression went dangerously mischievous, but he managed to keep a straight face through her teasing.  Granted he didn't know what she was teasing him about, but given the people he generally interacted with he knew how to recognize when it was happening even if he didn't know the context.  Hanae checked the storage doors as Genpaku looked away towards where two more people were coming in.  It didn't take Hanae long to catch on as well.  He stepped over as the three girls as the explanation came out, keeping quiet for the beginning.  Hanae certainly didn't seem happy about Nina's demand, and Genpaku couldn't help but smile at the antics considering Hanae outranked Nina and so should have been the one giving the orders.  Then again, given what Hanae had said at the end of the last group session.

When Nina turned and asked him, he looked at her with a quizzical expression for a few moments.  He looked between the two for a few quiet moments as he considered.

“What exactly were you planning on drilling the third seat on, Miss Togami?” he asked at length.  His own look took on a mischievous glint for a moment while Nina answered, before it suddenly shifted to serious as he turned and fix Nina with a look.
“I will agree to this, however; you are going to the infirmary to get checked out, then you are taking a few days break from training.  And I do mean all training.  Your fervor and dedication are admirable, but if you don't give your body time to rest and recover then you will do more to tear yourself down than build yourself up.  Take it from someone whose found it out the hard way,” he said.  His tone started firm, which may have been a slightly startling since Genpaku rarely gave orders to people in his Division.  While he was the captain, he generally didn't take on a tone of authority unless he needed to.  However, his tone softened at the end and he gave a small smile.

Hanae's expression drooped when Captain Arishima questioned Nina. "No, no, no! Oh come on..." Hanae crossed her arms and pouted more, "I can't fight it if the Captain says it." "You won't when I do either. Now, shh!" Nina said and began coughing. Nina looked back to Captain Arishima once she finally finished her coughing fit. "Her Hohō is pathetic and so is her hand to hand. She's pretty good at Zanjutsu, but I'm pretty convinced that is only because she was obsessed with the old Kill Bill movie from the world of the living" Nina explained. Hanae looked to Captain Arishima and nodded in agreement with Nina, not a single ounce of shame in her reasoning for learning zanjutsu.

Nina's expression drooped as well when Captain Arishima ordered her to go to the infirmary. She was okay with that, but the continued punishment was too much! Nina tried to interject, "Bu-... I... Wh-..." but she couldn't until her Captain stopped speaking. By the time he was done though, Nina was defeated and slouched even more. "Yes, Captain." Nina agreed with a sigh. "HA!" Hanae pointed at the sickly Nina with a cocky smirk. Hanae stepped up to her friend and bent over slightly, getting in the slouched Nina's face, "You force me to train, then you are forced not to train! Can't argue when it comes from Captain Arishima, can ya? Can ya, can ya, can ya? Now you go on. Shoo. Shoo."

Nina placed her hand on Hanae's face and pushed the girl away. "Yeah, yeah. Shut up, Hanae! Try not to disappo-..." Nina fell into another coughing fit. Hanae and Miko both looked worriedly at her. Hanae pushed Miko to hurry on and take Nina to the infirmary. Once the two left, Hanae looked back to Captain Arishima and then toward the door as if she was going to bolt it. "There's no way I have any ability to escape you..." Hanae looked back to Captain Arishima and then sighed, "I'm gonna diiiie..."

Genpaku gave a single nod when Nina agreed to his demand. He took in the information about what Hanae needed work on, more concerned with that and the health of his Division member than Hanae's teasing. Nina broke into another coughing fit, and Genpaku frowned slightly. Miko started off with her, leaving just Genpaku and Hanae left in the room once more. Genpaku's gaze followed the retreating forms of the other two division members as they left, concern on his face. He looked back at Hanae as she contemplated running from him.
“Come now; last I checked I didn't have a reputation for being that hard on the Division training wise,” he commented. “Take a minute and get warmed up. I'm going to send a quick message.”

Genpaku walked to the door of the dojo, scanning around for a moment before he caught sight of one of the hell butterflies. He reached out a hand and it came to perch. He concentrated on the person he wanted to contact.
“Hey, its Gen. I'd like to call in a favor real quick; one of my Division members has something wrong with her. I'd like a second opinion on her condition when she arrives at the Tenth Division infirmary. If you can spare anyone, I'd appreciate it.” He gave a small motion, and the butterfly fluttered off as Genpaku turned and walked back onto the floor.
“So. I know what Togami-san said you needed to work on. What do you think you need to work on? I know she focuses on Hakuda and Hohō, but not everyone does.” he commented. Granted, he'd probably end up at least seeing what Hanae's Hohō technique was like but best to get an opinion on it first.

Hanae's worry was obvious if you looked in her eyes. She could keep a straight face, but her best friend being so sick wasn't the easiest thing to accept. Once Miko and Nina left, Hanae's attention went back to her Captain and she expressed her worries about training with him. Of course, she was mostly joking. "No, no. I know, Captain." Hanae smiled and pulled out a ribbon to tie up her hair, "I doubt you'd actually kill me, and frankly, the other Captains could learn a thing or two from you on how to handle their squads." Hanae nodded and finished tying her hair. When Captain Arishima went to send his message, Hanae started warming up with a few stretches that Nina taught her.

"Well, she's kind of right. No, she's completely right." Hanae sighed and looked away embarrassed, "I suck at Hohō and Hakuda. In the Academy, they only really taught the basics of Hohō. I can do minor flash steps, just enough to pass, and only because I was kind of babied through my classes. Nina has been trying to teach me, but she's more of a doer. She gets as good as she is because she just does it and it's like she automatically understands how to perform it. I don't. If you could find a way to teach this..." Hanae knocked on her own head a couple times, "... how to understand Hohō better, that'd be great. I was gonna ask a long time ago, but you being a Captain... Well..." Hanae just shrugged.

Genpaku listened intently as Hanae explained her lack of skill in Hakuda and Hohō. He had a few theories on what might be the problem, but without actually seeing her in action he couldn't be sure. He seemed to consider her for a moment before he gave a small nod.
“I think I might be able to help with that,” he said as he walked back towards the middle of the room.
“Generally when people think about the Hohō techniques, they think of large distance movements. They think about being able to step halfway across the Seireitei with one step, and that such movements are the be all of the techniques. While I understand where that outlook comes from, its a little backwards. And so,” he trailed off, coming to a stop not too far from Hanae.

He looked up at her, back to the ground, then took two steps back.

    “Shunpo to me,”
“"Uh... Sure, okay!"” she said, seeming to size up the distance. Genpaku watched, and a moment later there was a thud behind him as Hanae slammed face first into the wall. He turned around to look, blinking a few times.
“...That happened,” she groaned as she stepped away from the wall holding her nose. To Genpaku's credit, he didn't laugh or shake his head. He simply nodded as though it all made sense.

“Well, with that I believe I know what the problem is. When you Shunpo, you're using too much power,” he said, walking over to her once more. He gestured to his thigh, then his calf. “Consciously or not, you're focusing your energy into these muscles and trying to move as quick as possible. These are not where you want to focus your energy; you're not trying to turn your legs into launchers. You want to focus your energy out of the bottom of your feet.”
To show, Genpaku made a point of closing his eyes and focusing his power. A light glow of energy arose from the bottom of his feet before he shunpo'd...all of a foot to the left. The glow faded as he opened his eyes.
“The smaller scale movements are harder, but they will teach you the feel of the technique much better than simply trying to jump halfway across the courtyard. Its a step, not a jump,” he said. His tone wasn't patronizing in the slightest.
“With that in mind, try that again. This time, aim for the middle of the room since you're at one side already.”

Well, that happened. Hanae's body slammed straight into the wall behind Captain Arishima and damn did it hurt. That was an unexpected outcome of a single shunpo, but she did say she sucked at Hohō. Needless to say, Hanae was embarrassed by the failure, but shrugged it off quickly as Captain Arishima explained what she was doing wrong. His explanation was sound and made sense, at least in her head. She watched his movement about a foot to the left and then looked down to her own feet. "So I gotta try it again, huh?" Hanae asked after being told her new destination. She stared down at her feet and did as he said. She concentrated the reiryoku there as best as she could. Unfortunately, her best still left quite a bit of energy throughout her legs and it was completely unbalanced.

When she attempted her next shunpo, she over shot it again and did not find it easy to stop. She reappeared a couple feet beyond her target and slid across the floor like she was wearing socks on tile. She lost her balance, kicking her legs to try to regain it, but fell on her face anyway. "Okay, I blame you for that one." Hanae joked. She lifted herself from the ground and sighed. "I told you I suck at this! Even Nina can't teach me..." Hanae pouted, her cheeks slightly red with embarrassment, "I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I did the foot thing, like you said. What went wrong?"

Genpaku watched Hanae's display of...that, and grimaced at her landing. He had a clearer idea of what was going on, not that it'd help the pain in Hanae's face much.
“I take it that Togami-san has worked with you on trying to use techniques without addressing the underlying problem...” he mumbled as he walked over to Hanae. He seemed to look over her again for a moment. Then he nodded once, turned and walked to the edge of the room.
“Catch,” he called out as a wooden boken flew gently through the air towards her. After she'd managed to actually catch it she'd find a strange sight coming at her.

Genpaku was almost upon her by then, the tip of his own boken reaching out towards her. To her the lunge would probably seem quick, and it was supposed to seem that way. Given his general approximation of her skill this should have been a quick lunge at her, but not something truly beyond her capabilities. It was a sudden shift from what had been happening thus far, and that was part the point.

With only slight difficulty, Hanae was able to catch the boken. She raised a curious eyebrow at the practice weapon and looked up to find her Captain coming at her. With a weapon in her hand, Hanae had much more confidence than before. Her Captain's lunge caught her slightly of guard, but not enough that she wouldn't be able to defend herself. Hanae brought the wooden sword between her and her Captain's in a single swift movement, stopping his attack from connecting with her. With that movement, Hanae's eyes showed more focus along with that confidence boost. This was something she knew how to do and enjoyed, so it was definitely easier to react. "Nina did say this was the one thing I know how to do." Hanae said and brought her second hand to the handle of her weapon.

"Am I that hopeless? Even my Captain can't seem to teach me to shunpo like a normal Shinigami!" Hanae was obviously playing around, but her stance was still as strong as the grip on the boken. "I'm only joking... Why the switch though? Did you figure out what the hell is actually wrong with me?"

“Indeed I have,” he commented, and took a stance that wasn't a stance at all. He just simply stood as he looked her over a moment more.
“You do not lack control; the angle of that block and amount of power put in were quite good. To gain that much skill would have taken time and effort, and furthermore it would take precise control to learn. That you can do that means you contain the capacity for control, but not the practice or inclination to use it in other forms. Hohō techniques are about control and focus; how many shunpos can you take in a row? How much ground can you cover with each step if you're trying?” He waited for her answer before continuing. “In short, you're trying too hard. You are trying to jump when you should be trying to step. It is not a matter of power or aptitude, but of control that you are lacking.”

He made a gesture at her stance with his boken. “Obviously, you can learn control. You must learn to control the flow of energy in your body, rather than letting it control you.
Genpaku seemed to think a moment before he turned and walked back to the edge of the training area, setting the weapon down. He walked back until he was standing twenty feet from Hanae.
“If you can strike me, you can call it an end of your training session for the day. However, you can only approach me using Shunpo.”

So what he was saying was that she could do it. Well, okay then. "Um, maybe twenty? I can possibly do more, but that's questionable. It tires me out more than I like." Hanae answered his first question and then thought about his second. She seemed to be counting something in her head and then looked back to him. "Maximum distance I think I've reached is probably four hundred yards with one try. I can get distance, but..." Hanae just shrugged and Genpaku continued on. "Trying to jump, huh?" she repeated and stared at the floor as she considered his words. When she looked up again, he was walking away. The next real part of her training was about to happen. Her mission was hard. "Oh, is that all?" she said sarcastically and slapped her hands over her face, "Alright then. Shunpo only."

Hanae was going to try this, but was not promising herself anything on actual improvement. Her first attempt caused her to hit the wall behind him... again. Her second attempt was the same thing. Her third, she stopped before she hit the wall, but was getting more and more frustrated with each attempt. On her fourth, she stopped and thought about it. Step, don't jump. She tried her fourth time and stopped about five feet shy of him, but lost her balance and fell to her knees.  She groaned in irritation and returned to her starting point for the fifth time. After a few moments of thought again, she tried her fifth time and stopped about three feet shy of being able to reach him with her arm outstretched. Hanae stopped with that one and stared at him, any normal look of cheer gone.

Genapku looked back at Hanae, calm as the center of a storm. He raised an eyebrow at her, before smiling ever so slightly.
“Not bad for five steps, but we're not quite there yet. But I think you're starting to get the feeling. You don't have to reset each time by the way.” And so it passed; hours slipped away as Hanae tried again and again. And all at once, it was done! She'd done it; she'd landed a hit on her Captain. Now he hadn't moved when she'd finally closed the range, hadn't budged when she'd swung and made contact. He smiled, and told her she'd done it. She was free to go grab lunch and do whatever else she'd wanted for the day.

She did not take the news very well.

After the confusion, she refused and returned. That wasn't enough, wasn't a real challenge. Yet, it was a first step. And it was improvement.

So the day wore on; people came and went, looking in on the practice and moving along after a while. The exercise evolved; once she was well past flying into the walls, he began to move. She had to keep up with him. There was a break (she had earned lunch after all), and the training continued. Whether you want to count it as lucky or not a full day of one-on-one training with a Captain was not exactly something one normally got. As the day drew to a close it found the two having long since left the confines of the training room. Now they sat atop one of the tall walls that sat the base of the Senzaikyuu as the sun lowered.

“You did quite well today, for all you complained about being bad at this,” he commented, breaking the silence. “I imagine Togami-san will have quite the surprise, once she's allowed back to her training that is.”

The first strike was extremely anticlimactic. When she hit him, she had expected him to dodge, so being told she succeeded and to go get lunch was not something she wanted to hear. It felt too easy. She felt like she didn't accomplish anything impressive, so after eating a rather unsatisfying lunch she returned to him and demanded more with as much respect in her tone as she could keep. Her training continued on and she was getting the hang of it. She gained a bit more control and understanding on how to implement more accurate shunpo. In her book, these were much better accomplishments than the lackluster strike she had hit her Captain with. And having earned some time to relax, after quite a long training session, Hanae found herself outside. She sat with Captain Arishima on top of one of the large walls that surrounded the Sensaikyuu. They had been here for a while, just watching the sunset.

"I didn't die." Hanae replied with relief, "That's the main thing that matters to me, but holy moly..." Hanae took off her sandal and sock and set it to the side, giving herself a foot massage. The bottom of her feet were red and worn. "Usually this is how my legs feel after a days training with Nina. I guess all of the pain went to my feet since I changed where I was putting my energy." Hanae looked out over the Seireitei at the setting sun and smiled. It was a beautiful sight; she was surprised she hadn't seen this view before. "So, Captain... Why were you okay with helping me train? It's not every day, if ever at all, that someone gets to train with their Captain. And if they do, it's not as much as we did today."

Genpaku listened quietly to Hanae's question, and left it hanging in the air for a few moments while he thought.
“You needed the help,” he said at length, as though it was obvious. “I can't help train everyone in the Division the way I helped train you today, but generally you'll find not everyone wants the help training like today. Generally speaking, many Shinigami are secretive with their training because they feel the inherent competition in the Division rankings and would rather not be tipping their hands to others. That's why most Shinigami train in either pairs or small groups instead of as Divisions as a whole. Since you actually asked for the help, in your own way, of course I was willing to help out.”

Genpaku seemed to consider his own words for a moment before a surprisingly boyish smile crossed his features. He reached up and scratched the back of his head.
“Though maybe you could not tell everyone in the Division that; I don't need a line forming outside my door for personal training every morning.”

Hanae watched his boyish smile show up and couldn't help  but smile back. She could understand why Nina liked him; Captain Arishima was kinda cute. Unlike Nina though, Hanae had no issue with saying it. "You know, you're kinda cute." Hanae told him, smiling in her own 'girlish' way, "I have no problem keeping it a secret, but only on one condition." Hanae held up her index finger toward him.

"You have to help both Nina and I every now and then. We're not going to come to you for training every day. You're a Captain, we're not that stupid or selfish. However, because of both of our rankings, there aren't that many people that have the skill or wisdom to actually aid us in our climb. We'd ask Lieutenant Makabe, but she's... kind of scary and I don't think she got off on the right foot with Nina during our exercise anyway." Hanae finished her personal foot massages and put her shoes back on.

"So, Captain Arishima, as long as you can agree to that, I promise I won't go around telling anyone about your personal training sessions. If not though," Hanae was obviously speaking playfully, "I cannot promise what happens or who figures out about it. So whaddya say, Cap-ee-tahn? Hm? Hm?"

Genpaku looked over to Hanae when she called him cute; he rolled his eyes and chuckled at that, but stopped when she continued to speak. He seemed to consider her 'offer,' which honestly read more like low-scale blackmail than an offer, before he simply shrugged.
“I don't see a problem with that I suppose,” he said in all seriousness. Then his expression twisted into something mischevous. “That means no complaining when I push the two of you though,” he said with an evil tone and smirk. After a moment he let it drop, and looked back out over the Seireitei.

“If its training you're looking for, and power you're concerned with, have you both found the names of your Zanpaku-tous?” he asked, more looking to understand exactly what level of student he was effectively dealing with at this point.

Hanae's mischievous smile fell to slight fear when he talked about pushing them. She thought for a moment and then giggled like a schoolgirl. She scooted closer to Genpaku and nudged him with her shoulder. "You don't have to worry about that!" Hanae assured him and then became excited, "Nina will love having a training session with you and since I'm finally getting shunpo a bit better, I think training might be more fun. When you feel like you're not getting anywhere, it's really just disheartening and kind of destroys your self confidence. I felt like I got a bit of a boost to mine today."

Hanae contemplated how to answer his question. Her situation was a little different, at least she thought so. "Nina hasn't, I know. She's too concentrated on becoming the best Hakuda user in the Seireitei." Hanae explained and glanced to her Zanpakutō. She hadn't trained with it at all today, but it had been with her. "I've started trying... She's stubborn and keeps pretending to give me her name. At other times, she'll give me a piece of it, or switch up the letters to make something else. I have figured out Sen and kura, since they've been repeated. She's making it a puzzle. Don't know why."

Genpaku nodded along; he could appreciate how important a boost of confidence could be. She moved on to answering his question, to which he couldn't help but chuckle at.
“Every Zanpakutō spirit has its own opinion on what 'qualifies' their wielder to gain access to their powers. Not a great deal that anyone can do to help you on the specifics, but I imagine continued work on your energy control will help you out,” he commented. He thought back on the events that led to the discovery of his Zanpaku-tous.

“As for Togami-san, I can understand her desire and I imagine its a large piece of what has propelled her so far already.” He thought for a moment that, if he could manage it, arranging a training session for Nina with Kaminari some time down the line may well be beneficial. As far as Hanae was concerned, he'd have to think on it for a short time but perhaps he knew someone that could give her better advice than he could. Zanjutsu wasn't the skill set he'd focused on, despite what many thought he would do or would have been smart given his two Zanpaku-tous.

"I see..." Hanae was in half a daze while he explained. She couldn't figure out why her Zanpakutō was making everything a puzzle. Weren't these things supposed to be some sort of image of their wielder? "Well, I don't understand mine just yet. It's there. Every time I talk to her, I feel it, but I just can't grasp it..." Hanae explained, sighing in frustration. "Yeah, it's propelled her. It's propelled her into not gaining her shikai and being average or worse in everything else." Hanae said with a hint of jealous annoyance in her tone, "I suck because I actually suck. Nina can do it. She just chooses not to."

Hanae fell silent. Her mind wandered a bit before a question came to mind. She turned her attention back to Genpaku and raised an eyebrow. "Are you dating anyone?" she casually asked. There was reason to her question, but nothing that seemed on a personal level. In other words, Hanae did not yet have that type of attraction toward her Captain... yet. After getting his answer, she tilted her head and stared curiously for a few moments, "Do you even remember her? Nina, I mean. I can't tell."

“I think you underestimate your own potential, Miss Jukodo. Your skills with your Zanpakutō surpasses most of the Shinigami not only in this Division but most, and if I had to guess I'd say its on par with mine if not greater and you've been a Shingiami for a shorter amount of time than I have. More importantly, you pick up things quite quickly. Many who would have undergone the training you did today would have continued to slam into the walls for weeks if not longer. It took you five tries to start getting the feel of it. I think you've a long ways to go yet, but I think the road for you is equally long; you'll go far,” Genpaku said, still looking out over the Seireitei.
“As for Miss Togami, if she is as determined and driven as you say I've little doubt once she turns her mind to it she'll find her Zanpakutō's name and advance even further.”

Hanae fell silent before she seemed to come up with a strange route of questioning. He turned to look at her; maybe you'd expect him to flush red at what was a somewhat intimate question. He seemed more curious by her question though.
“No, I am not. Never been something I've really looked to do,” he said, and it seemed to be the end of that line of questioning for the moment. Instead, Hanae switched gears it seemed and asked if he remembered Yukina.
“Miss Togami; the girl that came in today nearly passed out on her feet. The one who managed to land a hit on me in the last exercise. Yes, I remember her,” he said as though it should have been obvious. He looked at Hanae then, and some of the joking had bled out of him.
“Or, perhaps, you are referring to something else Miss Jukodo?”
