It was lunch time around the Soul Society, and much of the Tenth Division was enjoying its break from its various duties.  Not everyone was enjoying the downtime though that was, oddly enough, common.  The Captain of the Division was strangely missing from any of the dinning locations.  For the same reason, one particular courtyard was emptied about this hour.

Sitting at the center of that courtyard was Genpaku.  He sat in apparent meditation; his Haori was folded and sitting near him, his Zanpaku-tous resting across his legs.  He sat in the lotus position, hands cupped and resting in his lap.  All around him hung power; it hummed, it practically sang, as it hung in the air.  It felt like an encroaching storm, like static, and like danger.  Occasionally electrical sparks would snap out, and there was the slightest hint of his reiatsu visible in the air around him.  For all of that, this was far more controlled than you would see this scene in any kind of stressful situation.  Genpaku wasn't able to really control this level of Reiatsu to make it safe for use in crowded areas.  This was practice in that control, as Genpaku pulled the energy in and held it as calm as it would stand to be.  This was subtle where this power was concerned, which wasn't to say that you couldn't sense this level of power from just about anywhere in the Tenth Division grounds.

Control was of great importance to the young captain of the Tenth Division; left unchecked it was likely that Genpaku could kill weaker Shinigami and others with just the pressure created by the release of both sets of his Shinigami powers at once.  This was a large part of why the true strength of this ability, Kyoumei, was not a well known factor.  His Division members were somewhat familiar with the feel of this controlled and dampened effect (since Genpaku did in fact have a barrier up to lessen its effects on those nearby); left unchecked though such power could cause many problems.  And so Genpaku spent time every day sitting in this position, the first stage of Kyoumei released as he focused on controlling the three different energies that roiled within and about him.  Generally, people didn't bother him when he was doing this because that was what he had ordered.

So he sat and conentrated.  Breathe in, breathe out.

If there was one thing Lilith Antonovich wanted to be right now, it was drunk. Her night had gone a direction that she planned to fix violently, but before she could do that, as a Captain of the Gotei, she had to take care of a few things first. The most important one, in her mind at least, was informing Genpaku Arishima of what happened to his Lieutenant and sister. Lilith left Kei with Yua in her apartment, warning them not to leave without at least leaving a note of exactly where they would be going. As long as Kei was with someone, Lilith was able to relax just enough to function. And with this calmer mind, she made her way to the Tenth Division grounds to hunt down the first person to talk to.

Lilith could feel the power radiating from the area buzzing along her skin as she walked into the Tenth. She could see some of the tension in the weaker Shinigami as they got closer. Many tried to meditate under it, as if trying to get used to their Captains power, but weren't having a good time of it. Lilith made her way to the mostly empty courtyard to see Genpaku meditating in the center. She avoided any sparks that may have come her way and stopped next to him. Because of her eyepatch, Lilith was mostly hidden, which was a good thing because her actual reiatsu would probably disrupt him. This technique of his always irritated her because of how many times he had almost died learning it.

Lilith stepped up to him and sat down about three feet in front of him, lightly patting his head to show him she was here. This was something that she had done many times. He did not have to stop his practice any time soon, but she was here. Lilith curled her knees up to her chest, actually expecting him to continue for a while and not caring if he did. She put her arms on her knees and her face in her arms and just waited for a while. Once he was done with his meditation, she would still be there.

Genpaku didn't react when he heard footsteps approaching him; there were only a few people that would be approaching him when he was doing this, and even fewer that would not call out to him as they approached.  This was confirmed when he felt a light pat on his head; he gave a small smile.  These meditations didn't have to go on for any specific length of time, so he relaxed his focus as he let the disparate energies separate once more.  He opened his eyes as the energies calmed, an emerald glow in his eyes that faded as the energies settled once more.

Genpaku's smile fell when he saw Lilith however, replaced by a concerned frown.  Everything about her body language and demeanor was the complete opposite of how she usually was.

“Hello to you too; what's wrong?” he asked, picking up his Zanpaku-tous and placing them on top of the Haori as he rolled his neck from side to side; holding still and channeling that energy had a tendency to bring some tension into his neck and shoulders.  As Lilith began to speak he focused back on her, the concern plain on his  face.  Today was about to get complicated he felt.

Lilith's head raised when she heard his voice. She pushed up a smile, but her eyes said it all. "I'm telling you because I have to tell you." Lilith looked seriously at him, "I don't want to tell you because I know how you get, so I don't want to see or hear any of that shit." Lilith waited for some sort of reaction from him and then took a deep breath, getting ready to spill the beans about everything.

"I'm sure you heard about the meeting that I called with Kei and the Captain Commander. I know no details have been given out yet, but that happened." Lilith explained, her eyes focusing on the floor, "When the meeting ended, Kei left alone and I stayed with the others to continue the discussion. During that time, she was attacked... brutally. I found her Zanpakutō lying in the middle of the Seireitei and followed her into the sewers and found her..." Lilith closed her eyes and pushed the memory from her mind to speak again, "She's gonna need some time off. She's staying at my place for a while. I don't want her alone until everything gets settled." It was obvious that Lilith wasn't being one hundred percent honest. There was some details that she was leaving out, but there was a reason for that. "If you have any questions, you're gonna have to ask. My mind is everywhere but a good place."

Even by Lilith's standard this was more confrontational than normal, and that had Genpaku more concerned.  She looked for a reaction, but instead got mild confusion from him.  The fact that she didn't want to tell him something because of how he'd react was certainly not making anything better.

For all that, he sat quiet while Lilith spoke.  He'd be aware of a meeting taking place, but as he had not been invited to it had not given it much thought afterwards.  Apparently the meeting had ramifications however.  The confusion and concern gave way to anger, but in a quiet way.  It was a thing Lilith would know, could see in Genpaku's eyes and the tension in his body.  Even though he and Kei had never been what most would call close, the fact that someone or something had attacked her still roused anger in Genpaku.  Blame the fact that when they had initially met, neither had been what you'd call a 'people person' as far as interaction went.  Still, she was someone important to Lilith and she was the Vice Captain of his squad; the fact that someone had hurt her struck a cord in him.

The fact that Lilith didn't want to give details, and frankly that she was side-stepping something if not outright lying about something did little to ease the young Shinigami.  But flying off the handle wasn't going to fix it.  It was rather obvious that Lilith was holding herself together by sheer willpower and lack of a target.  So Genpaku closed his eyes and took a breath as he set what he knew in order.  Kei was injured in some fashion and out of commission.  Someone or something had gotten to her.  Judging by Lilith's attitude, whoever it was had escaped judgment.

“She'll have all the time she needs,” he said as he suddenly rose.  He reached down and picked up his Zanpaku-tous, placing them back on his belt.  He picked up the haori, shook it once, and settled it over his shoulders.  He looked to Lilith and made a motion for her to follow.  He made his way back at a brisk pace to the apartment he maintained in the Division barracks; it was considerably more lived in than his other home, and a great deal closer.  He got the feeling that Lilith didn't want to be stray far from her own home since that was where Kei was, but it was also implicit that whatever was going on was of a more confidential bent for now.  The apartment's living room was surprisingly cozy.  He made a motion to one of the couches for Lilith to sit should she want to.

“Who or what attacked her?” he asked simply as he hung his Haori up.

Lilith's initial way of bringing this up may have come off wrong. Well, no. It came off as she wanted it, but her approach was wrong. Whether she saw Genpaku as a son or not shouldn't have mattered, that included the daughter she saw in Kei. The fact was, Kei was Genpaku's Lieutenant and keeping some details from his bothered her on multiple levels. Her frustrated sigh made that clear. Lilith followed Genpaku to his apartment and sat down as he offered. Her mind really was elsewhere, otherwise she'd probably have commented on his apartment being a mess, even if it wasn't really. He hung up his haori and asked the question that definitely needed answering. "Hidan, the Lieutenant of the Seventh." she answered briskly, her tone filled with seething anger, "Because of that, we have to approach the situation delicately. Internal Affairs isn't exactly supposed to have traitors within their ranks. The fact that Kei said he also used an ability that is not normally in his arsenal, some sort of portal she compared to a garganta, has some wondering if it was him or something disguised as him."

Genpaku looked back when Lilith gave him a straight answer; he'd half expected her to say she wasn't going to tell him so that he didn't go storming off after the culprit. He should have expected otherwise.

If things were that simple, Lilith would have already beaten him to the punch.

He placed his Zanpaku-tous down near the door, and made his way over to the small kitchen as Lilith explained.

“Who all knows already?” he asked as he poured himself a glass of water. He found he was suddenly rather thirsty. “Want anything to drink?” he asked. He ran through things in his head. Given the strange events already happening where the denizens of Hueco Mundo were concerned it wasn't out of the realm of possibility that something was going on. Then again, the Gotei wasn't exactly above suspicion anymore.

And here he'd woken up thinking today was going to be a quiet day.

Lilith watched him move to the kitchen as she explained. His next question had her think for a moment. "Kei, Yua, Midori, myself, and now you. I don't know when, but I'll have to approach the Captain Commander about this sometime soon, likely today if I don't want to hear him complain at me over it." Lilith thought about a drink and her eyes said it all, "You got anything that's not water... or juice... or soda... and that can make my head a little fuzzy? If you got that, I'll take that. If not, then water is fine." Lilith sighed and laid her head back on the couch, staring at the ceiling. She felt more than at fault for this. "Which is probably why I thought you'd freak out, but nope... I'm the one freaking out about it." Lilith spoke her thoughts aloud, semi-aware of it. When she realized she did, she facepalmed.

"Sorry about my stupid... assumption, accusation... whatever you want to call it." she said, still staring upwards, "I knew Kei had a problem with the dark and didn't walk her home and then this shit happens. I should've gone with her, but I had to stay in that fucking meeting." Lilith brought her arm over her face as she clenched her jaw. "He raped her, Genpaku. He snuck up behind her, hit her on the head, and dragged her to the sewers just to take advantage of her. By the time I got there, he was gone and it's my fucking fault. If I hadn't let myself be known, I would have caught him and killed him."

Genpaku gave a nod, even though Lilith had already stopped looking in his direction.  He looked over the few cabinets he had before he opened one of the higher ones and rummaged around on its lower shelf before drawing out a bottle of amber liquid.  He brought down a small glass and poured a modest pull into the glass, listening as Lilith rambled.  She was circling something, and it was probably best to let her work through to whatever she was building up to.

He froze when she finally said it, and let the words sink in.  Then he reached out and took hold of a second glass, pouring himself a small pull of the drink.  He wasn't much one for drinking, but sometimes the occasion called for it.  He picked up the glasses and walked over, setting down Lilith's within reach of her with an audible thunk so she'd know it was there.  He took a seat opposite her, not quite sure what to say in this situation.  To be fair, he didn't generally have much experience being on this side of this kind of situation.

“I'd tell you its not your fault, and it isn't, but that never makes me feel much better about anything either,” he said, before raising his glass and taking his drink.  It burned going down, and he was reminded why he wasn't generally one much for drinking.

“Once we known for a fact who to take down, do it.  How long do you plan to sit quiet on it?” he asked, and there was a lot of the question.  Sure it was about how long Lilith wanted to play this quiet while they got what they needed, but it was also a question of how long she could keep quiet considering that she was ready to tear apart something at the moment, and it was a question of how long she wanted Genpaku to sit quiet about this as well.

Normally, Lilith would have pouted at him like an overprotective Mother and asked him why he had alcohol in his home, but today was not a day of joking. Lilith took up the drink and was going to just down it. She quickly caught herself and decided against it, taking a few sips. He said it wasn't her fault, but he was right about that not making her feel better. She felt at fault and that was all that mattered. She understood why he reacted the way he did sometimes, but this one was a bit too much, even for someone as strong as Lilith. Her daughter had just been hurt in a manner that haunted the darkest nightmares a parent could have. Lilith wanted to kill someone right now, but she couldn't and it sucked.

"Kei doesn't want this out at all. I asked her permission to tell you, actually. You can't really blame her, ya know? If you saw what I saw, you'd understand." Lilith gave Genpaku a reassuring look that said he would never have wanted to see that and just shook her head. She took a larger drink and set the glass down. "Midori is taking care of the samples, as she called it and took Kei's statement last night after healing her." Lilith explained, sitting forward a bit. Her eyes narrowed as if she had something she wanted to say, which she did. "I do have a theory about it. The meeting we had was about Kurisu Nadeshiko, the Lieutenant of the Second. We figured out that the poison that got Kaminari and Dai was one she created here, so how did that end up in the hands of an Arrancar? Not only that, but Kei and her left together after the meeting and Kurisu wasn't exactly shocked we called her in."

Genpaku gave a nod of understanding to Lilith's first comment, and listened as she continued to speak. The fact that Midori was the one that took care of the physical wounds made Genpaku feel a small piece better; you couldn't get anyone better, literally. Physically, Kei should be fine. Then again, the physical side of this wasn't the largest of the damage now was it?

Lilith moved on to her theory. Genpaku placed his glass back down on the table, leaning forward as he listened to Lilith's thoughts.

“You think she's got more going on than is being let on, and that she may have had a hand in this?” he questioned, mulling over the possibilities in his head. He didn't know this Kurisu Nadeshiko or much about her.
“There's too much in the dark here...” he commented. There were just too many holes in all of this right now; he felt like most of the events that had happened recently were connected, but how they were so was tenuous at best right now. Nothing was adding up yet, and that meant they couldn't react correctly.
“What do you think we should be doing?”

"To be honest, I don't know. During the meeting, she was more than willing to give out every ounce of information she had. I sensed no lie. She even had the guts to get hostile toward the Captain Commander when he asked her if she sold the information. Apparently, she's extremely protective of her work." Lilith explained eyes narrowed to the floor. She agreed with Genpaku; there was too much in the dark. The timing just felt too convenient, so Lilith felt her suspicion was well placed.

Lilith sighed and shook her head and picked up her drink. She thought about Genpaku's question and couldn't come up with any other answer. "The only thing I want to do is wring that asshole's neck." Lilith's voice became threatening as she hissed out the words. She found herself squeezing the glass she held too hard and it shattered, the pieces and rest of her drink falling to the ground. Lilith sighed and glanced up from her mess to Genpaku, "Sorry, I got it. You got a towel around here?"

Lilith insisted on cleaning the mess herself. She picked up the glass, dried the lost alcohol, and tossed the towel in the kitchen sink. It took Lilith a moment to return from the kitchen. She ended up staring at the sink lost in thoughts of the night before. When she finally came out of them, she wiped a tear from her face and then went back to the couch. "I'm, uh..." Lilith cleared her throat, "... gonna have to talk to the Captain Commander about it. They'll launch an investigation, but we'll keep it from most people. Have you heard of any Shinigami acting strangely or using powers they don't normally have?"

When Lilith broke the glass Genpaku didn't really give much of a reaction. She looked up at him, and he gave her a small shrug as way of saying 'don't worry about it' as he motioned to the counter.
“Should be one over there.” While Lilith cleaned up Genpaku sorted through what information he had thus far. He half wanted to go talk to Midori to see if he could get any more details, but he had a feeling that Lilith was going to be headed in that direction after she checked on Kei (because he was sure that was where she was headed after this conversation). She would be hunting down every detail she could get until she got the bottom of this. He was right there with her.

Even if Kei and him weren't that close, what had happened was wrong.

Lilth cleared her throat, bringing him out of his thoughts. He gave her a wry look at her last phrasing, however.

“Have I seen anyone acting strangely or using powers they don't normally have, in an organization that hunts monsters and occasionally has members discovering abilities that can alter the world around them? Well,” he started, but trailed off meaningfully. While he wasn't likely to lighten the mood much, it didn't mean he wasn't going to try.
“That said, no. Nothing has come up that struck me as out of place or suspicious. I'll keep an eye out though in case something crops up. The Tenth Division will assist in any way we can,” he said, adopting a more formal cadence for the last bit. As much as the Gotei was a single organization, the Divisions largely operated independently of one another. Allowing other Divisions to walk in and conduct investigations generally wasn't done, with some exceptions. In a sense, Genpaku had to phrase it the way he did so there wouldn't be any issues.

“And if there is anything I can do to help, you know you just have to say the word,” he added.

Lilith understood that her question was a little strange. People were coming up with new abilities every day just to rise in the ranks. However, some abilities were just out of place, a like a Shinigami using a garganta. It was just not done, if that is exactly what had been seen. Lilith raised an eyebrow as Genpaku succeeded in his attempt to lighten the mood. "Smartass." she said and popped a small smile as he thought, "I didn't expect you would have, but I need to go check on Kei. I don't like being far from her with what went on." Lilith made her way toward the door, but stopped next to Genpaku.

"You be careful, okay?" she said and placed a hand on his shoulder. She got a mischievous smile on her face before she would have let him go and then pulled him into a hug. She proceeded to kiss his cheek three times with three 'muah, muah, muah' following before hurrying toward the door. "I know I can count on you, just keep watch. Love ya. Later!" And with a showing of a peace sign, Lilith rushed out of the apartment with an uplifted mood, but rushed back toward her place to check on Kei.

He gave her a small smile when he successfully lightened the mood, and it seemed that Lilith left a little happier than she'd come so he'd done something right.  As she left she pulled him into a hug; as was only his duty, he put up a small fuss before she rushed out and back towards her own apartment.  He smiled as he watched her go.

His smile faded once she was out of sight to a neutral expression, one of contemplation.  Genpaku's thoughts were not happy though.  He'd suspected that things were getting tense behind the scenes of the Gotei, but this was something else entirely.  He felt it was connected to, to everything that was going on.  To the strange behavior by the Hollows, to the attacks on Kaminari and Dai, and the strange behaviors by the Twelfth Division.  In a quiet way, things were culminating.  To what though, Genpaku didn't know.  He wasn't wrong when he said they were lacking enough pieces to know what exactly was going on.

That just meant they needed to be prepared.  For anything.

He took a breath, and smiled once more.  Things were dark yes, but he wasn't going to get anywhere wallowing in that darkness.  He grabbed his Haori and headed back to the Division training grounds.
